Skamania Lodge is located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, 45 miles east of Portland, Oregon, on the Washington side of the river. (See map and directions from Portland International Airport (PDX).) Ground transportation options to Skamania from PDX include the Symposium's one chartered bus, shuttle service, limo, taxi, or rental car.
Airport bus
Airport bus
The Symposium will organize ONE BUS that will leave PDX at 4:00pm Thursday afternoon arriving at Skamania around 5:00pm. The bus will leave Skamania to return to the Portland airport on Monday, departing Skamania at 9:00am and arriving at the airport around 10:00am. The cost of a bus ticket is $75 round-trip or $40 one-way.
Before and after the meeting
It may be convenient to spend the nights of October 11 and/or October 17 in Portland. Many Portland hotels offer special OHSU rates. Please be sure to mention your affiliation with OHSU when making inquiries.

Skamania Lodge offers spectacular views of the Columbia River and the cliffs rising above it and is located close to world-class hiking opportunities, as well as climbing, biking, windsurfing, kayaking and fishing. The Columbia Gorge is famous for its waterfalls. The best known is Multnomah Falls, the fifth largest waterfall in the United States. A U.S. Forest Service Information Center is located in the Skamania Lodge lobby and can provide futher information about outdoor activities.

A Canopy Zip Line Tour is now available at Skamania. Experience stunning views as you zip through the Columbia Gorge rainforest on this unique guided tour. The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum, located across the street from the Lodge, provides a display of local history and Native American artifacts.

Other local activities include scenic drives, a river boat cruise, a ride through the valley on the Mount Hood Railroad and visits to nearby wineries, breweries and museums.  Skamania Lodge is 7 miles from the Carson Hot Springs, offering a spa and naturally heated mineral water pool, and 23 miles from Hood River, Oregon, famous for its year-round windsurfing and kiteboarding, its dining scene and its produce, particularly the apples and pears celebrated by the mid-October Harvest Fest.

The weather in the Pacific Northwest during October is pleasant but cool and often rainy. We recommend bringing a light jacket for days and something warm for evenings. If you plan to go hiking, be sure to bring suitable shoes and rain gear.
Alternate hotels

If our room block at Skamania sells out as expected, the resort will take names for a waiting list. We recommend getting on the Skamania waiting list and also making a back-up reservation at an alternate hotel nearby. See below for selected lodging options closest to Skamania. Please note that neither of these is close enough to walk to the Lodge; however, the Symposium will try to organize carpools to/from the Best Western Inn across the bridge in Cascade Locks.
